Hora-madonna-komplexet: - den kvinnliga dualiteten och dess funktioner i opera
Stockholm University of the Arts, Opera.
2026 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 4,5 HE creditsStudent thesis [Artistic work]
Abstract [en]

This work explores how the Madonna–Whore Complex, a term and concept coined by Sigmund Freud, has influenced the portrayal and characterization of female characters in opera.

Through an analysis of the opera Carmen by Bizet and its key female characters, Carmen and Micaëla, I investigate how these harmful archetypes function as dramatic devices and shape audience perceptions of female characters. I also discuss the practical implications of this type of portrayals through an interview with opera singer, director and educator Eva Österberg.

Ultimately I argue that while these structures remain deeply embedded in the operatic tradition, performers, directors, and educators have the ability, and perhaps the responsibility, to challenge and reinterpret them through conscious artistic choices.
