Abstract [en]
This work examines character work for trouser roles. How can I, as a female singer, simplify my scenic process in order to embody male characters more easily? During scenic and musical rehearsals I worked with a variety of roles to explore different mindsets for each character and to find tools that could help me access them more quickly. I discovered several useful approaches, such as playing with status and power, using a lower and more grounded body posture and an assessing gaze. These tools helped me enter male characters more effectively but I also found that they could be equally as useful for a more gender-fluid approach when called for. Furthermore, they also proved helpful even for some female roles, such as Carmen. My conclusion is that each individual character requires a unique combination of tools and that I would rather base my character work on the specific role than on the character’s gender. Therefore, power became the central keyword of this project as many of the tools I explored were connected to the expression of authority, status, and presence on stage.
