The objective of this research lies at the border of dance and the circus area called object manipulation. Through this practice-based research Challenging Hierarchies aims to understand what the organic dialogue of the movement practices contemporary dance taught at Stockholm University of the Arts and the hoop dance practice known within the flow arts community can result in. Shifting the focus from aquiring technical skills/tricks within hoop practice, incorporating dance into the artform, the intention lies within breaking hoop technic focused thought patterns.
During 13 studio sessions, different movement themes were explored through the method of introspection. The concepts of material agency, intra-action and agential cut from Karen Barad, as well as Gert Biesta´s thinking on dialogue have served as a theoretical background.
Challenging hierarchies intends to work with the movement practice of hoop dance both within artistic and pedagogical context.
